FORTUNE TELLER: JEFF CANNATA

Poly-talented Jeff Cannata made his debut in the music biz founded the Jasper Wrath at the end of the 60's along with Michael Soldan, Robert Giannotti and Phil Stone. The band, the creator of an original mixture of beat, prog rock and vaguely psychedelic light up, she was noticed by MGM and put under contract. The debut album, recorded in the studies by Phil Ramone in New York, gets a resounding critical success: comparisons with the music of Yes and Gentle Giant were not slow in coming. After several auditions, he was hired vocalist James Christian (later frontman of the House of Lords) and the training is extended with the grafts of the keyboard player Jeff Batter and guitarist Scott Zito. The ceaseless play Jasper Wrath live activity in the Northeast of the U.S. until 1976, when economic difficulties and musical differences will cause the dissolution. In 1983
Cannata signed to Portrait Records (CBS family) and he published Arcangel : light years away from prog Jasper Wrath of the seventies, the hard doth an excellent, hard heady pop enriched by a magnificent carpet of keyboards and vocal lines that call to mind Rick Ocasek of the Cars. In addition to the role of composer, which splits the old companion Michael Soldan, Cannata assumes also that the singer, who performs with surprising results.
In 1988 Carrere (always under the protective wing of CBS) offers Cannata at the possibility of building a home recording studio analogue to 24 slopes, where affect and compose freely. The result is Images of Forever , including the magazine Kerrang! the top ten albums of melodic progressive rock of the year. The disc looks like a pop version of the 90's Saga targati : the voice of Jeff, in fact, has striking similarities with that of Michael Sadler and the use of the guitar is reminiscent of the style of Ian Crichton, guitarist for the combo Canada. In 1993
Cannata signing a contract for the British label Now and Then: the result is Watching The World , hard to confirm the music of our original recipe, a maker of soft rock but not anodyne, airy and bright. In 1997, prodded by fans, Cannata personally supervised the publication of the complete works of Jasper Wrath: a double CD (for a total of 26 songs) that drains quickly, unfortunately, a limited edition.
Five years after leaving Tamorok , alternating recordings of a classic novel with not too distant past. In 2006 he Magnum Mysterium, the disc's most ambitious Cannata, a real hotchpotch of music, a crucible in which all the influences and styles he practiced meet and merge, creating a mosaic of shimmering beauty.

HOLDING THE LINE: TOTO

"... the skeptic in me
conviction that beauty can not be
so beautiful, smooth, combed"
(Richard Bertoncelli
music critic and writer)

Toto I belong to that group of musicians who can boast of having monopolized for long periods of negative opinions of our local militant music critics as a reflection of inevitable prejudices and stereotypes cemented in time. Born in the mid 70's, the American group - whose peculiarity was to be composed of renowned and sought after session musicians - began immediately in the telescopic sight of our critique to show the alleged of their instrumental expertise. Who has a good familiarity with the discography of the band Steve Lukather & co. what will turn up their nose. The first disc of the band - Toto (1978), Hydra (1979), Turn Back (1981) and partly Isolation (1984) - in fact offer the listener a good example of fine rock, sometimes strong, sometimes relaxed, played with technical The finest ever performed for free. The music that comes out (once it was written "by microgroove", now almost exclusively "from the optical disk") is played with passion, not only with mastery. Alas lacks in rebellious rage, and this 'guilty' shortcoming many experts have never forgiven them, one of the most experienced, Richard Bertoncelli, then (as now?) Apologist confessed of "the only beauty's ugly, man" (the only beauty is ugly, friend) to Dylan's memory, still branded as "too tame [...] too lacquered, too beautiful [... ] and so good. " For Bertoncelli of Italy, for that matter, Toto have been and always will remain, the unbearable "first class," perfect and soulless. Yet the first records of Toto, and a handful of songs scattered in the other, a soul (and not "mortacci them ...) have it. It is ugly, dirty, iconoclastic and bad, but no less beautiful. If it is true that, with age and the onset of routine and so, have lost spontaneity and authenticity (like Dylan and the other pioneers of the Brut and Bon), is the least questionable assertion that "a lot of music 80 [were] much more interesting lives and daring." Leaving aside the notion of "interesting" does not appear that to be considered "a lot more lives and daring" the music should have a clear pedigree punk, nihilistic and proletarian. You can write music alive and courageous "in the shade of palm trees in California and not called John Doe and Exene Cervenka (former leader of the X, however great), but Jeff Porcaro and David Paich ...

DISCOGRAPHY

Toto (1978) *** 1 / 2 - A song about all of them: "Hold The Line . Also worthy I'll Supply the Love George Porgy and . Toto I get nominated for the Grammy for Best New Artist.

Hydra (1979) *** 1 / 2 - The most successful single of this album, 99, was inspired by a film by George Lucas, "The man who escaped from the future" (THX 1138, 1971), in the film, people were in fact identified with numbers rather than by name.

Turn Back (1981) *** 1 / 4 - Toto harden the sound, and many fans turn up their noses. Too bad, because the songwriting is inspired, and the songs tough as ever in the future. The album, unfortunately, will be half misstep for the band, it only reached position number 41 on the Billboard charts.

IV (1982) ** 1 / 2 - As a direct consequence of the flop Turn Back, Toto soften: well too. The hard fact is sometimes soporific. Not enough Lovers in the Night, and especially Africa to remove the impression of anemia mannered. But since the quality and success are not assumed and therefore, the disk becomes even platinum. In 1983, thanks to IV, Toto Grammy win as many as 6 ...

Isolation (1984) *** - During the recording of the album the singer Bobby Kimball leaves (or is dismissed for the "usual" problems of alcohol and drugs ...), Steve Porcaro and recommended his friend Dennis "Fergie" Frederiksen, we already active in the (semi) unknown Le Roux and Trillion. Advice was never more inspired: Frederiksen has un'ugola titanium, does not regret his pre decessore and brings new life to a sound that was in danger of anemia at all. The single from the album Stranger In Town are and Holyanna . In the video for Stranger In Town the main part is played by actor Brad Dourif, that, between others, Child's Play, Trauma, Mississippi Burning, Alien IV and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Fahrenheit (1986) ** - Frederiksen unfortunately leaves. In its place comes Joseph Williams, son of John, composer of popular soundtracks (ET, Star Wars). The album is a step backwards: Toto definitely veering towards a soft rock radio and forgiveness grit and polish of better times. The single most successful I'll Be Over You (in the chorus stands out the voice of Michael McDonald).

The Seventh One (1988) ** 1 / 4 - A subtle step forward from the previous album. Prior to the album, Steve Porcaro left the band to continue as a soloist (mainly as a composer of film scores), but will continue to cooperate actively with the band. On this album, two hit singles such as Pamela and Stop Loving You (also in the chorus Jon Anderson, lead singer of Yes).

Past to Present 1977-1990 (1990) sv - Joseph Williams leaves during the Toto The Seventh One Tour, and the band decided to call Bobby Kimball, with whom he recorded some songs (including Goin 'Home , which is then inserted in XX). The record, however, pressure for the Toto pay an South African Jean Michel Byron, who sings 4 new songs. During the subsequent tour, Toto, however, aware that Byron is not suited to their style and redundant: the four unknown in this collection are therefore the only evidence of his art with the group. Despite the incompatibility with Byron, Out Of Love still becomes a hit single in Europe.

Kingdom of Desire (1992) ** 1 / 2 - Williams is not replaced by any singer role. E 'guitarist Steve Lukather to deal with all the solo parts. The release of the album is marred by a sudden tragedy: August 5, 1992 the drummer Jeff Porcaro died of a heart attack. Perhaps partly as a result of this tragic event, the record sounds hard, edgy, aggressive. In a word, unrecognizable in the ears of fans. A little flour and plenty of Toto - perhaps too much ... - Steve Lukather. Kingdom of Desire seems to a solo guitarist, rather than the eighth studio album of the group ... The single from the album is Do not Chain My Heart . The song that closes the album, the instrumental Jake to the Bone, was originally conceived by Steve Lukather with a vocal score by Roger Waters, who was recording his Amused to Death in the study next to that of Toto.

Absolutely Live (1993) *** - It 's the first official live band. Simon Phillips, will replace poor Jeff Porcaro, learn in six weeks, the lineup of the Kingdom of Desire Tour concerts of this tour will end with usually With a Little Help From My Friends the Beatles, but in the version handed down by Joe Cocker.

Tambu (1995) ** 1 / 4 - absorbed the shock - emotional and professional - for the death of Jeff Porcaro, and left the hard matrix lukatheriana, Toto found a center of gravity of melody, even if the disk is too homogeneous and crystallized, harnessed in a soft-rock soul with unusual grain. The only drops of energy gives the Drag Him To The Roof ... official debut album for drummer Simon Phillips, but is forced to give up for health reasons in the first part of the promotional tour and was replaced by Greg Bissonette (David Lee Roth Band in already).

XX (1998) sv - It 's a collection of rare material, unreleased and live, which celebrates 20 years of career of the group. On the promotional tour taking part in some ex-band members, Steve Porcaro and former singer Bobby Kimball and Joseph Williams. The single " Goin 'Home , will also be inserted (in a different version) in 3, Joseph Williams solo album. Among the material selected for this collection is to be reported On the Run, which is the last official recording (made during il Montreux Jazz Festival) con Jeff Porcaro alla batteria.

Le registrazioni sono state effettuate in Francia durante the Mindfields Tour

Through The Looking Glass (2002) *** - Toto dealing with the microcosm of the "cover". Eleven pieces, from classical Could You Be Loved by Bob Marley the final It Takes a Lot to Laugh , It Takes a Train to Cry Bob Dylan, through Steely Dan, Elton John, Cream, Elvis Costello, George Harrison and Herbie Hancock. The result? Amazing ...

Live in Amsterdam (2003) ** 1 / 2 - Yet another live, recorded during a tour of twenty-five years.

The Essential Toto (2003) sv - Collection published by Sony in the series "The Essential", available as single and double CD.

Falling In Between (2006) ** 3 / 4 - Thanks to the enterprising Neapolitan label Frontiers Records, which puts them under contract by surprise, Toto return to a record in 7 years away from Mindfields . The time is not spent in vain: the band has found amalgam, determination and motivation, and the disc is a pure distillation of Toto-sound revised and developed properly.

MOTHER'S FINEST - THE BLACK SIDE OF FUNK ROCK

When it comes to crossover, with the funk-rock hybrid, there are two names on everyone's lips: Living Colour and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Few, alas, I am aware that waaay years before these there was a Caucasian-African American band called Mother's Finest ... but that proceed in order.
I Mother's Finest born in the early 70's in Atlanta, Georgia, on the initiative of the singers Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy and Glenn "Doc" Murdock. They are the first interracial rock band: their music mixing funky rhythms, angular guitars and harsh vocals and vigorous but with a strong soul inspiration. The second disc, which repeats the title of the first, "Mother's Finest," published in 1976, contains the song "Can not Sang Nigizz Rock'n Roll", a true musical and ideological manifesto, which then drew the arrows of an important character of the religious world pushed the band to cancel the lineup dei concerti.

OWNER OF A TALENTED HEART: TREVOR RABIN

Maybe a few people who have never heard "Owner Of A Broken Heart," megahit of Yes weblog 1983. Few, surely, however, are those who know the name of him who was the architect of that sound: Trevor Rabin. Trevor Charles Rabinowitz was born in South Africa January 13, 1954 from a musical family: his father is Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra first violin. As a child takes piano lessons, at age 12 he discovered his talent for guitar rock. In 1974 he formed his first band, Rabbitt, with whom he recorded two albums, Boys Will Be Boys (1975) and A croak & a grunt in the Night (1977), which also earned him national recognition. The Rabbitt, unfortunately, can not go on tour abroad because of the pro apartheid policy of their country, so Rabin decided to leave the band and in 1978 he moved to London to pursue a solo career. Between 1978 and 1980 recorded three albums, "Trevor Rabin" (also known by the title of "Beginnings", 1978), "Face to Face" (1980) and "Wolf" (1981), the latter made the former Cream bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Simon Phillips, in which highlights a rock mature and varied, expressive voice and excellent guitar playing. In 1981, knows Chris Squire and Alan White, drummer and bassist, respectively, of the legendary progressive band Yes, just broke up, and they decided to start a new musical project, which soon took the name of Cinema. Keyboards, after the resignation of Eddie Jobson (UK, Jethro Tull), the three historic recruit another member of Yes, Tony Kaye. The search for the singer is more labor intensive: at first he was contacted Trevor Horn (former lead singer of Yes on the unfortunate "Drama", 1980), che declina; poi si pensa di affidare l'incarico allo stesso Rabin, infine un fortuito incontro a Los Angeles tra Squire e Jon Anderson, voce originale degli Yes (ancora loro!), scioglie ogni dubbio. The entry of Rabin, which in addition to composing many of the songs and playing the guitar, often duets with Anderson on lead vocals and plays keyboards, is instrumental in its success. It 's true that, apart from the angelic voice of Jon Anderson and some distinctive vocal mixes, the new course of Yes music has nothing in common with the original sound of Rabin's guitar is more modern, hard, essential, than that of Howe (who has never made any secret of not stand it), but knows if necessary repeat brilliantly virtuosic twists that made her famous predecessor. In 1987 it was the turn of "Big Generator", which contains the single "Love Will Find A Way", written entirely by Rabin. At this point ancient disagreements emerge between Chris Squire and Jon Anderson, resulting in official documents and courtrooms: the band broke up. In 1989, Rabin took the opportunity to release his fourth solo album, "Can not Look Away." In 1991 he re-formed Yes with training extended to eight elements: "Union" is the title, significantly, their new album. Ups and downs Rabin continues to play with them until 1995, when he leaves, determined to devote himself to composing soundtracks: These include "Armageddon," "Gone in 60 Seconds," "Flyboys," and Snakes on a Plane ". Musician little known and appreciated by the public, but estimated by experts, Trevor Rabin was a multi-instrumentalist rock di assoluto valore, ottimo compositore.e arrangiatore, valente esecutore. A chi ancora non lo conosce consigliamo di recuperare, a parte i dischi incisi con gli Yes - soprattutto i primi due -, almeno il terzo e quarto da solista, considerata la difficile reperibilità dei due cd dei Rabbitt.
Non è detto che, tra un Linkin Park e un Green Day, tra un Interpol e un Kid Rock, per non scomodare le icone dell'hard & heavy o del prog rock, non riesca a ritagliarsi un piccolo spazio nella vostra discografia.

ITALIANS ROCK IT BETTER # 2: MOONSTONE PROJECT

Time To Take a Stand". Il disco vanta collaborazioni a dir poco prestigiose: la lista dei cantanti che hanno prestato la propria celebrata ugola va da Glenn Hughes (Trapeze; Deep Purple) a Graham Bonnet (Rainbow; MSG; Alcatrazz; Impellitteri), da Paul Shortino (Rough Cutt; Quiet Riot) a Steve Walsh (Kansas), da Kelly Kealing ad Eric Bloom (Blue Oyster Cult), senza dimenticare il grande James Christian (House of Lords); come se non bastasse, in diverse tracce troviamo Ian Paice (Deep Purple) e Carmine Appice (Vanilla Fudge; King Kobra; Blue Murder) on drums and Tony Franklin (Firm, Whitesnake, Blue Murder) on bass. A real Dream Team settantiana array of hard rock, no doubt about it. However, be making a great injustice if I did not mention the other musicians, less noble, but no less brilliant, completing this precious mosaic Sarzi Henry & Alex Mori, Maurizio Corriga, Nik Mazzucconi, Chris Catena, Gianluca Tagliavini, Alex Del Vecchio, Daniel Flores and Johan Niemann. Someone will ask: how did an unknown musician with the internationally well known artists get to collaborate on his project? He explains the Filipinos, "Paice was the key! It was very easier to involve all the others, obviously if you get a big name to take part in your project (and in my case, you're nobody), there is always a bit 'mistrust. If you show up saying that Ian Paice of Deep Purple playing on your album, you can more easily overcome many barriers! And so it goes off the guest list grew parallel to the credibility of Moonstone Project. Let me be clear, not enough to pay for certain musicians. Some have said no, and I respect them because they have always done with elegance. "
Patience, Matt: those who refused them even end up on the second disc!

ITALIANS ROCK IT BETTER: WINE SPIRIT

Hands who never saw the advertisement Citroën C2, that obtained with the anime (Japanese cartoons)? Few people know this, but the song that serves as the soundtrack is the Tail Gunner Milan Wine Spirit! The Wine Spirit
born in early 1996 by a group of three musicians active in the Milan area for many years and coming from different experiences, which have seen them work alongside Italian and foreign artists (Paola Turci, Samuele Bersani, Tour , Gigi Cifarelli, Zachary Richard, Mambo Chicken among others). The group comes to life with the desire to rediscover the old classics (but not only ...) hard rock-style Anglo-American the last two decades (Van Halen, Deep Purple, Motörhead, Kiss, Black Sabbath) and the deep roots of the band, authentic rockers also and above all in daily life. The rousing live shows Spirit of Wine is a moment of absolute celebration of rock more blood, intense and visceral, enhanced not only by the capacity of the instrumental power-trio but also to involve and entertain the public, more and more each concert . Official demonstrator since '97 Yamaha Music Italy, for which he has held numerous clinics from one end of the Peninsula, while contributing to Gods of Metal 2000 and 2001.
After the release of their first official album, "Bombs Away" in November 2001 for the Texas-based label Perris Records, the band signed a new recording contract with the label Sacred Metal, for which her second album, "Fire in the Hole" in 2004.

LET IT ROLL - INTERVISTA CON PHIL MOGG DEGLI UFO

After more than 30 years of career, what is the secret that allows the UFOs to fly so high again?
"Alcohol! (Laughter) Seriously, there's never been anything planned. I think none of us imagined to last so long: high and low, dropout and meetings have come to strengthen us.
Perhaps the complementarity of our characters .... "

"All'epoca, io, il chitarrista (Mick Bolton, ndr) e il bassista (Pete Way, ndr) vivevamo a Londra e bazzicavamo i Roundhouse Studios, dove era in auge l'acid rock. I Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix, i
Free erano da poco usciti allo scoperto; we have contaminated the space rock soured with the blues at that time, in fact, became interested more in r & b and blues. "

From prog psychedelic" Prince Kajuku "(from" UFO 2 - Flying ", 1971, ed) in a very direct form of hard rock: What caused this change?
" We played a short time, we had no well-defined musical identity. When we signed our first contract we had never set foot in a recording studio,
could only boast a performance at the Marquee (famous place in London, ed.) We had no experience in songwriting and recording, and since then we started a scrivere sempre più.

We attended a concert of Scorpions and we were impressed by the talent of Michael (Schenker, ed), we did so we 'borrowed' for the concert that evening, and after that
. At the end he set out to join us. Bernie, however, was a great musician, a great guy and fun, except when he took off his shoes and put them under the heating of the car! The heat makes the air very smelly! Once Bernie had taken off her shoes and fell asleep, Pete Way to put in a plastic bag and tossed out the window. "

Of all the hard blues rock band, UFOs are who have kept their best musical identity. What is the secret?
"I think it is a combination of styles: that of Michael, Pete's and mine. We realized when we tried to play with other musicians."

How did you get in touch with Leo Lyons of Ten Years After bassist and producer of "Force It", "No Heavy Petting" and "Lights Out"?
"We were signed to Chrysalis, which also deals with the management of Ten Years After. One day the boss of the label suggested we go into the studio with Leo, and we accepted gladly."

back a moment and "Force It" was a cover of impact ...
"If they took the study Hipgnosis, who had already drawn one of 'Phenomenon' and then realized that the 'No Heavy Petting'."

It was released two versions, one for the American market and one for English ...
"In America you would not show the nipple on the inner side European Union, so they decided to blend the two female figures. Personally We found nothing offensive nor particularly encouraged. Furthermore, the cover was lost by changing the meaning of it (laughter). "

How did you get in touch with George Martin (the legendary Beatles producer who in 1980 looked after 'No Place To Run' ed)?
"Always through our label, Chrysalis. We previously worked with Ron Nevison
(in 1978, for 'Obsession', ed), who had done a great job, but at that time wanted
ourselves with someone else" .

What is your favorite album of UFOs from a strictly musical point of view?
"I do not know. Usually I tend to grade the records based on the memories associated with them, so I might not be as objective in the choice! Remember that we had a lot during the recording of 'The Wild, The Willing and The Innocent '(the first self-produced, ed), as well as' No Place To Run 'and before' Obsession 'and these are just my favorites. The material of the first period I would say 'No Heavy Petting' and 'Lights Out', which represented a milestone in our evolutionary process. "

As a singer who were your masters?
" the old guard as Screaming Jay Hawkins, Sonny Boy Willliamson, Muddy Waters and Howlin 'Wolf. Among the most recent ... Steve Marriott (singer and lead guitarist of Small Faces and
Humple Pie, ed) was one of my favorites, so Joe Cocker and Terry Reid. "

Speaking of solo singers: in this capacity would could affect a lot of records, but you did not. Why?
"It was never the opportunity presented itself, I have always been involved with UFOs and there was not much time to devote to something else. I recently recorded a couple of records as a Mogg and Way
with Sign of 4 .... "

Why did you title your album a "Sharks" ("Sharks", the last with Michael Schenker, in 2002, ed)?
"Because we are surrounded! (Laughter) They're everywhere."

This is paranoia, the topic discussed in "Doctor Doctor" (one of the band's first hit, dated 1974, note), I think ...
"Exactly."

song that brings us back to the past: where does Phil Mogg?
"In the present, here and now, but I have a good memory ..."

GRAHAM BONNET ROCKS YOU TO THE GROUND PART 1 (1968-1981)

(statements of Graham Bonnet & co. Are drawn from several interviews published on http://www.bonnetrocks.com/ )

Top Ten by Graham Bonnet

1. White Album (The Beatles)
2. In Through The Out Door (Led Zeppelin)
3. Talking Book (Stevie Wonder)
4. Surf's Up (The Beach Boys)
5. The Buddy Holly Story (Buddy Holly)
6. Love on the Airwaves (Gallaghar & Lyle)
7. All Things Must Pass (George Harrison)
8. Imagine (John Lennon)
9. The Kink Kronikles (The Kinks)
10. No Dice (Badfinger)

La band si scioglie, mentre Graham Trevor and enter into recording studio to record some songs of the brothers Gibb, Neil Sedaka and other artists. Barry Gibb is the supervisor of operations: it is to find and impose as The Marbles (Robin's brother had chosen Peanuts ...), while Bonnet and Gordon had thought his name was Bonar Law. The duo was signed to the Polydor and released their first single in August 1968, written by Maurice and Barry Gibb, Only One Woman. Due to the overwhelming interpretation of Bonnet, impressive vocal range that is ideal cross between Tom Jones and Rod Stewart, the song reaches the fifth place in England, and even in South Africa's number one.
L'anno successivo viene dato alle stampe il loro primo, e unico, album, ristampato in cd nel novembre 2003 by Repertoire Records with the addition of several bonus tracks and a booklet full of photos and news.
After the end of the Marbles, Bonnet ends meet recording jingles, and in 1974 he even makes his debut as an actor in a comedy Three For All, directed by Martin Campbell, in which she plays the role of Kook, singer a band by the curious name, Billy Beethoven.
In 1977 Graham Bonnet out first try as a solo artist, which won the gold in Australia. Driving part of an album devoted to the verb of a rhythm & blues cover of Dylan's It's All Over Now, Baby Blue , played with vigor by our. The disc doth a glossary with clear references to the nostalgic 60 Years: Bonnet running Will You Love Me Tomorrow , written by Carole King and brought to success in 1961 by the Shirelles, and a version of It Is not Easy Ron Davies, engraved five years earlier by David Bowie "Ziggy Stardust", and is measured even with a traditional folk-blues as Rock Island Line, recorded by Leadbelly for the first time in 1937, while the only song written by the former is the Marbles third, the merry march soul of Wino Song .
In 1978 he published No Bad Habits; disc there are two versions, one Australian and one Dutch, with ladders different. In 1981, the disc will be reissued in Japan with a fundamental shift: Warm Ride, the brothers Gibb, is replaced dall'incalzante Bad Days Are Gone , written by Bob Young and Mickey Moody, with a nice solo that impreziosce . No Bad Habits territories traces the pedigree of our most congenial with the slow, painful Is There A Way To Sing The Blues , blues cadence Cold Lady, the perky folk-rock of Can not Complain , rock and roll Stand Still Stella to surprising reggae Only You Can Lift Me , South African singer-songwriter John Kongos, from whose repertoire Bonnet proto-world music draws on two other songs, Pyramid and the closing, solar Will not You Join Me , the latter preceded by Dylan I'll Be Your Baby Tonight .
released in 1979 for the German market Can not Complain, album that collects the best of both previous albums. That same year, the unexpected happens: Ritchie Blackmore is looking for his Rainbow of a singer that he does not regret Ronnie James Dio, andatosene for the usual creative differences. The choice, after a very short sample (the only Mistreated), falls on the Bonnet, "Ritchie remembered hearing me sing with Only One Woman Marbles, and Roger Glover asked about my account. I, honestly, I did not know who were the Rainbow. Of course, I knew the fame of Deep Purple, but at the time my musical preferences were the Beatles
...". In light of these statements, the choice seems risky, because the curriculum and look at James Dean (!? ) do not seem the best suited to erase the memory of fans remember the elf's Italian-American voice from adamantine.
On 28 July 1979, published in England Down To Earth, album that marks a significant turn towards sounds more mainstream: "The decision [to soften the sound] was taken before I joined alla band".
Man On The Silver Mountain" and "Long Live Rock 'n Roll": "Singing songs not recorded by me gave me the unpleasant impression of being under constant comments like' is not as good as ...'". The last performance of the singer (and drummer Cozy Powell) with the Rainbow is the best, August 16, 1980, Castle Donington nell'esaltante frame, to seal the first edition of the Monsters of Rock, in front of 100,000 enthusiastic spectators . A curiosity: the stage is performed Will You Love Me Tomorrow , drawn from the repertoire of the solo singer, the group would like to publish as an individual but which remained unpublished.
As mentioned, after the Monsters of Rock drummer leaves, and keyboardist Don Airey threatens to do the same. Bonnet, who had tied a lot with the two, is displaced by the events and he meditates to leave the group, "was the new drummer Bobby Rondinelli, Cozy was gone, Don Airey was just going to go, things were changing . At that time we were in Copenhagen for the preparation of the new disc: the instability had made it unproductive. At one point I returned to Los Angeles and from there I announced that I would not be returned. With hindsight, I could not resist a little ', as did Don Airey, who did not go away immediately as he had announced. The routine, however, was taking over, the enthusiasm of the early days it was gone. Boredom occurs when it is better to give up, so I did. "
After declined the offer to replace Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath -" their manager approached me, I never refused ... I was never a big fan of Sabbath, although perhaps then made the wrong decision ... "-, Bonnet returned to devote himself to his solo career: it is under contract with Phonogram, Vertigo shore; David Oddie, his manager since 1977 and linked to the Quarry Productions, the project involves Francis Rossi of Status Quo - also the team's Quarry - and John Eden. Aim: the creation of a single, the choice falls on Night Games , Ed Hamilton. The song is catchy , has a melody commercial design and is just right: the compelling voice of Bonnet shall then provide you with a more aggressive musical outfit. The training gathered around the former lead singer of Rainbow (label on the cover of the inevitable future discs ...) is very respectable: Cozy Powell on drums, Mickey Moody to acoustic and electric guitar, Gary Twigg on bass, Andy Bown of Status Quo the piano and organ. Night Games in March 1981 is published in England, where it reaches the sixth. Bonnet also participates in the transmission Top of the Pops: the musicians who play on the disc are only Powell and Twigg. Meanwhile, in Japan, the song reached the second place.
The second single to be released is Liar piece written in 1969 by Russ Ballard of Argent for the first disc and already interpreted by Three Dog Night in 1971. The B side is taken up by much more aggressive Bad Days Are Gone. The choice of the label reveals unhappy Liar does not go beyond the 51 th place in the UK charts. It 's a pity that in his place was not chosen another song signed by Ballard, SOS, with dynamic aggressiveness, ideal for the business card of our scratchy throat, as explained by the same Cozy Powell " SOS was ideal, instead they chose a single anachronistic as Liar, and I often wonder how to reason the record: maybe they choose the waitress brings the tea. " The ingenuity, however, commit the most serious Bonnet himself, who returns to Los Angeles if they lose interest in the final mix of the album. Mixing that inevitably dampens more rock tones: "Despite the conditions, the disc ended up becoming pop, we played the likes of Jon Lord, Cozy Powell and Mickey Moody, but producer John Eden thwarted their presence with the arrangements of exaggerating keyboards. I was not at all satisfied with the final result. "
At the end of October 1981, the disc is finally given printed: Line-Up (This is the title chosen anonymous) received a modest promotion by the Phonogram, so that after reaching the 62 th place in the British charts disappears without a trace. The lp has some time convincing - Night Games , SOS , ballad and I'ma Lover Boy Anthony - but others are decidedly understated, and, more seriously, it lacks a clear direction in style: Be My Baby (Phil Spector) is defined by the English press "sugar nauseating." Bonnet relies on a classic rock 'n roll too weak and conventional production rende il disco anemico.
