When it comes to crossover, with the funk-rock hybrid, there are two names on everyone's lips: Living Colour and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Few, alas, I am aware that waaay years before these there was a Caucasian-African American band called Mother's Finest ... but that proceed in order.
I Mother's Finest born in the early 70's in Atlanta, Georgia, on the initiative of the singers Joyce "Baby Jean" Kennedy and Glenn "Doc" Murdock. They are the first interracial rock band: their music mixing funky rhythms, angular guitars and harsh vocals and vigorous but with a strong soul inspiration. The second disc, which repeats the title of the first, "Mother's Finest," published in 1976, contains the song "Can not Sang Nigizz Rock'n Roll", a true musical and ideological manifesto, which then drew the arrows of an important character of the religious world pushed the band to cancel the lineup dei concerti. Nel 1978 i Mother's Finest sono ospiti del programma televisivo tedesco Rockpalast e con un solo concerto - da poco ristampato in DVD, insieme a un concerto del 2003, con il titolo "Mother's Finest At Rockpalast" – diventano una band di culto in tutta Europa, status che mantengono tuttora. Sul finire dei Settanta il loro sound si ammorbidisce, virando verso il soul, ma nei primi Ottanta tornano a flirtare con l'hard rock ("Iron Age", 1981). Nel 1990, dopo un periodo di appannamento creativo e di disorientamento stilistico, culminato l'anno prima con "Looks Could Kill", nel quale propongono una azzardata miscela di suoni dance estranei alle loro corde, i Mother's pubblicano il live "Subluxation", non a caso registrato in Germania, vera patria musicale del gruppo, che incorona la band come una delle più travolgenti in sede live.
Due anni dopo suggellano il ritorno in grande stile con l'aggressivo, polemico, provocatorio "Black Radio Won't Play This Record" (1992), disco di potente hard funk rock esaltato dalla trascinante voce di Joyce Kennedy e da partiture di virulento impatto sonico. Dopo più di dieci anni di silenzio, nel 2003 i Mother's Finest escono dal letargo e pubblicano "Meta-funk'n-physical", più incline a inopinate sonorità hip-hop ed elettroniche, che finiscono per snaturare il sound delle origini. Per avere un assaggio assai eloquente del sound dei Mother's Finest si consigliano i loro cavalli di battaglia, da "Baby Love" a "Fire", da "Piece of the Rock" a "Mickey's Monkey" e a "Love Changes".
